Laminate floors can rival wood floors at a fraction of the cost
When you think laminate you probably picture the mustard yellow/puke green octagon flooring in your grandmother's house that is fading and peeling. What you might not think about is how far laminate has come in the last 50 years.
First, let's talk about style. Instead of the dreaded vomit savoir-faire, you can now choose from thousands of different colors, patterns, and designs. Styles vary from mock marble to imitation hardwoods. They look pretty realistic too. But what makes it really great is just how easy it is to care for.

Hardwood vs Carpet installation
Taking a look at the pros and cons of installing carpet and hardwood flooring.
Two of the most popular flooring choices in Phoenix are carpet and hardwood. The benefits of wood and carpet differ. Here’s a quick breakdown to help you decide which flooring is right for your home or office.
G&S Top Hardwood Floor Picks
With so many choices when it comes to selecting your next hardwood floor, I wanted to feature some of my favorite wood floors. Here's my top 10 picks.
Top 10 picks (in no PARTICULAR order)
10. Distressed Wide Planks
Large plank flooring is growing in it's popularity because of its elegance and lack of cracks. You will find no lack of choices when it comes to these wide plank styles. As with anything that picks up in popularity, manufactures keep up with the demand. I recommend selecting a distressed type of wood if you going after a raw or rustic feel.
Cool flooring options for phoenix residences looking to stay cool this summer.
So what does flooring have to do with keeping a home cool?
Every summer, in the Valley of the Sun, we are looking for ways to cut down on energy costs. I know when I receive my summer electric bill I can tell that my AC unit is working extra hard to keep my home at a desirable temperature.
Many of my customers are surprised to discover that the flooring they select can improve their home's energy efficiency. Here are some options that I review with my customers when they are considering ideas for flooring that will keep their home cool.
DIY Water Damaged Flooring Repair
Water damaged flooring of any kind is bad news.
Most laminate flooring is free floating (it doesn’t need to be nailed or glued down). When this flooring gets wet, water seeps through the cracks and settles under the flooring. This water will normally turn into mold within a day or two. Since it happens fast, it's important to address it as soon as possible.
Once the concrete below the flooring has become water damaged, or if it contains asbestos, you may want to hire a local flooring company.
A customer asked me about the effects of water damage on laminate flooring. This is a common question when it comes to damaged flooring and flooring repairs.
Here’s a quick overview of what you need to know when it comes to your flooring and water damage.
DIY Water damaged Flooring replacement
In some cases, the concrete below the flooring may not be damaged or soaked. If this is the case, and you choose to address this problem yourself, you will want to begin with removing the soaked flooring (it should be fairly easy as it is normally just connected pieces).
You can expect it to take about three hours per 350 square feet. If you are considering hiring a local flooring company you can expect to pay about $1.40 per square feet for removal. My company charges about $1.20 per square feet including the haulaway and disposal. If you live in Phoenix, AZ and are looking for a local flooring company, contact us for a free quote.
Once the flooring has been removed you can use industrial blowers to dry the concrete below. If you are unable to obtain a portable blower, then you will want to leave the subfloor uncovered for about a week to ensure that it is completely dry.

What to consider before you hire a Phoenix flooring company
In the flooring industry we see an increase in flooring projects during the summer months. As the owner of a Phoenix flooring company, here's what homeowners need to consider when hiring a flooring contractor.
Hiring a flooring company doesn't differ much from the things you would consider when making a big purchase:
1. Shop around
2. Check references/reviews
Finding an affordable and experianced flooring contractor in Phoenix
Obtaining a few quotes may sound like a lot of work but you can expect to spend less than 20 minutes with a contractor to obtain a quote (assuming you already know what type of flooring you’re going to with). Most flooring contractors in Phoenix will help you select, and purchase the flooring for your project.
When seeking out an installation company, it is not unusual to receive a high bid as some contractors bank on the fact that you are in a hurry to get the job done. This is the main reason I recommend obtaining two or three bids.
Factors that effect the cost of flooring bids
References & Referrals
Check out what others have said, and have to say about the flooring company.
If you are using internet lead services (such as HomeAdvisor, Thumbtack, Yelp! etc.) you can obtain user reviews and references from these sources. Keep in mind, these lead services are middle men, they don’t have their own contractors; as a result these services will charge the contractor to obtain your contact information. The fees charged to the flooring company is around $30 - $50 on average.
Here's a few basics when researching a flooring company
Hiring an unlicensed contractor is asking for trouble. A poorly installed floor can be aesthetically unpleasing and usually needs repairs or replacement prematurely -- costing you big bucks.

what are the BENEFITS of hardwood flooring anyways?
With such an increase in hardwood floor installation, I have been asked this question often.
Hardwood flooring is a common choice for homeowners looking to give their home a warm and inviting appearance.
Hardwood floors have become so popular that many styles have been manufactured to accommodate a specific homeowner’s tastes. This is the main driving factor for such an increase in hardwood installation.
But, what are some of the other reasons we have seen an increase in hardwood floor installation throughout the country and right here in Phoenix, AZ?
TIMELESS & ESTABLISHED
Hardwood floors are a solid investment. There is no end to the amount of upgrades that you can add to your home to increase the resell value, but not many are better than upgrading your home’s flooring to real hardwood floors.
If installed and maintained properly, your hardwood floors can last upwards of 20 years.
Anytime you can make cleaning easier it’s a huge win. Hardwood floors do just that; a quick sweep or even a moist mop will do the trick.
If you have pets, allergies or kids you may want to consider this type of flooring. Carpet is difficult to keep clean and can trap in all the bad allergens that drive you crazy.
Hardwood floors are in demand. As a result, manufactures are producing many different types of styles. This means that hardwood floors are perfect for any home, no matter the style – there is always a type of hardwood that will look good in your home.
If you change the style of your home’s interior, your hardwood floors can change with it.
That’s right, you’re not suck with the original look. Most hardwood floors have a quarter inch top layer that can be sanded down and stained. Since the top layer is so thick, you can normally do this more than once.
Since hardwood floors are in such demand, they are a nice amenity to accent a home with which will likely improve its selling power.

selecting the right tile design for your bathroom
When it comes to selecting a ceramic tile design there have been many trends over the years. However, contemporary designs are still #1 as the preferred go-to style.
The pro designers say that homeowners like white as their number one color design choice. Second to white, is grey – but the gap between them is still large. As reported by the National Kitchen & Bath Association.
Bathroom remodels still offer one of the highest Return On Investments (ROI). According to the National Association of the Remodeling Industry you can expect an average of a 64% return on investment. Not bad, considering so many other remodeling projects come in at the 25% range. However, much of overall feeling you will get from your bathroom remodel comes from the tile design. The tile design can make or break any tile job.
Just look at some of these nightmare tile design projects:
Ceramic Tile Design Idea
When it comes to tile design there are endless combinations. A safe bet is sticking with a design that is timeless, as, well...they’re timeless.
The classic subway look will likely never be out of style when it comes to bathrooms. Using the small tiles creates an illusion to make the room look bigger. Some may argue that using small tiles on your bathroom floor will make the room look smaller – I tend to disagree. The way I look at it, if you use large tiles, and have three tiles spanning the entire length of your bathroom floor, to me, that seems to make the room look smaller. So if you do decided to go with large tiles, you will likely want to select a grout color that matches the tiles. This will keep you from seeing each tile individually.
When it comes to selecting your next tile design, make sure you do some research to find the style that fits you the best. Here's a nice web based tile designer that will let you upload a photo and play with different designs: http://visualize.daltile.com/.
